Massage at The Backrub Store, St. Paul

The Highland Backrub / Frequently Asked Questions (FAQx)

1. Do I have to make an appointment?

2. Will people be watching me get my massage?

3. Does fully-clothed actually WORK?

4. Will I feel pain?

5. How much time should I set aside?

1. Do I have to make an appointment?

We take appointments, but they are not required. If you can't call ahead to schedule and wind up walking-in, you should probably expect a short wait (10-30 minutes most days). Same-day appointments are welcome!

2. Will people be watching me get my massage?

Although there is a "public" nature to the studio, much like a barber shop, you would be surprised at how much privacy you will feel once you lay down and start to relax into the experience. Soothing music takes up the space around you as your practitioner pays complete attention to meeting your needs.

3. Does fully-clothed actually WORK?

In our experience, you will get a better massage because of the clothes you are wearing. We go deep and directly into the body of your muscle system instead of gliding over it. Don't be surprised if you feel greater sensation than you have felt with a regular skin-to-skin massageā€¦ and greater relief from your symptoms! If you are looking for stretching work it would be helpful to avoid wearing jeans or stiff, collared, button-down shirts.

4. Will I feel pain?

Muscles in spasm, or long overdue for release, will often feel tender at first. Be sure to check in with your practitioner about the pain levels you are experiencing. There is no need to be in pain in order to feel better. The theory "No Pain / No Gain" is only relevant if you are comfortable.

5. How much time should I set aside?

If you are in pain today, be sure to tell your practitioner the details. We typically recommend 30 minutes to fully assess and treat every-day pain and overworked muscles. If you have chronic pain you may want to schedule a longer visit to allow more time to address longstanding pain. If you have been injured in an auto, home or work accident, let your practitioner know so that s/he can advise you about how much time you will need today, and whether or not you will need to stay longer, or schedule a return visit.
