Hundreds of Certified Massage Practitioners contact us each year about working at The Great Metropolitan Backrub stores. And many are able to join us once they realize how well staffing a Backrub store fits into their long term plan of being a successful bodywork practitioner.

In order to APPLY to staff a Great Metropolitan Backrub store, you should have the following:

Current Professional Liability Insurance—once hired you will need to add The Great Metropolitan Backrub as an Additionally Insured Party

If you plan to work at a location in St. Paul, a current St. Paul License in progress: go to www.stpaul.gov license page for more information.

An active E-mail account that you actively use—GMB uses E-mail as its primary communication tool. Practitioners who do not use E-mail regularly (almost daily) will not be considered for potential staffing positions.

It is important to distinguish the two biggest differences between staffing a Backrub and working for a spa or salon:

  1. No no-compete clause necessary. Whereas almost every bodywork studio or salon in the nation requires practitioners to sign a clause restricting their ability to “compete”, The Great Metropolitan Backrub has, as its mission, the right of each practitioner to build her/his practice through professional contacts and building relationships. Therefore, at The Great Metropolitan Backrub, practitioners enjoy the opportunity to build lasting relationships for their public practice at the Backrub stores they staff, as well as for their growing private practices.Stacey Workplace Massage
  2. No oversight management necessary. Practitioners at The Great Metropolitan Backrub stores are fully self-managed and take charge of most of the operations aspects of the store when they are on duty. This practice helps practitioners to become fully attuned to how businesses operate and what barriers they personally and professionally need to overcome to improve their own stake in the store as well as in their private practices.

If your interest is piqued, keep reading for a more detailed idea of what you will be in for if you want to join our amazing staff:

Self Promotion
First and foremost, GMB is a promotional opportunity for bodywork practitioners who are in private practice close to or inside of the Twin City area or who wish to build a public practice here at GMB. We are a group of highly motivated public and private practitioners, working together to provide a professional environment for everyday people to get the therapeutic bodywork they need.

All practitioners have the opportunity to gain private practice clients from the customers they serve here. So you can see that if you have, or plan to have, a healthy private practice, GMB is the place for you! All private practices must meet the standards of GMB management in that they are professional, clean, housed in a designated room or office and safe.

Self Pay
All GMB practitioners are paid on a cash basis and enjoy 50% of their net sales (gross sales minus discounts). A space rental fee of $10.00 per four-hour shift is paid to GMB by the practitioner regardless of their level of sales for the shift.

We do accept credit cards and practitioners are reimbursed for credit card sales on a twice-monthly basis. Gift Certificates redeemed are paid out at a rate of 25% of the face value.

Self Managed
Leigh Workplace Massage All GMB practitioners take responsibility for managing the store when they are on duty. Cleaning, stocking, promotional work, merchandise and gift certificate sales and answering the phone are all regular duties of GMB practitioners. In return, they gain insight into the details of running a business, as well as a sense of investment in the smooth operation of the business for the benefit of the customers, their colleagues, and themselves.

Self Motivated
All businesses have down time. GMB practitioners take advantage of their down time by building their public and private businesses: sending out promotional materials for GMB or strategizing for their own practice. The goal of the GMB practitioner is to be busy on every shift they work. This is accomplished by utilizing the vast resources GMB provides: its mailing list, its informational materials, and its access to thousands of customers each year.

Does this all sound good to you? Because this is not a job, this is a Public Practice. This is the place where you can get paid to promote yourself, improve your skills and learn more about business (and about you in business…you will be surprised at how many challenges there are to overcome in order to achieve the success you deserve).

If you are still interested in working in a GMB Store, please do the following:

  • Provide a resume with your work experience, volunteer experience, references, education and licenses/certifications you have.
  • Provide a detail of your private practice: where it is, what it looks like, what you like about it and who you see there (e.g. "lots of clients", "fewer than you would like"…)
  • Include a cover letter that explains why you think GMB is a good fit for you, what your dreams are, and how you think you could benefit the business and the other practitioners by joining us.
  • You can drop these off at either location or put it all in the U.S. mail to:
    The Great Metropolitan Backrub
    317 West 38th Street
    Minneapolis, MN 55409

    - or -

    The Great Metropolitan Backrub
    762 South Cleveland Avenue
    St. Paul, MN 55116
  • You may also feel free to contact us HERE and attach your resume, private practice description and cover letter on-line.

Although we may or may not have openings when you contact us the first time, we do keep an active list of interested practitioners. If you would like to be on this list, please indicate this in your letter and/or call back or contact us every month or two to see if we need new staff. It is the most motivated practitioner that joins the Backrub staff….persistence is motivational!

I look forward to meeting you in the future. We will always need excellent, motivated, professionals like you! Thank you again for your interest!

Sincerely,

Annette Rondano, Owner
